How to Get Your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

Determine What Type of CDL You Need

CDLs come in three classes based on the type of vehicle you want to drive:

  • Class A: For combination vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.
  • Class B: For single vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.
  • Class C: For vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers.

Make sure to select the right CDL class based on your career goals.

Find an FMCSA-Approved CDL Training Program

You’ll need to attend an Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) program from an FMCSA-registered provider. You can find approved training schools near you on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.

  • What to Look for:
    • Schools with a good reputation and high pass rates.
    • Flexible class schedules and locations that suit your needs.
    • Assistance with scheduling your CDL skills test after training

Meet the Basic Requirements

Before you start your CDL training, ensure you meet the minimum qualifications:

  • Age: At least 18 years old to drive within your state (intrastate), and 21 to drive across state lines (interstate).
  • Physical Health: Pass a DOT physical exam and obtain a Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
  • Background Check: Ensure your driving record is clean, with no major violations.

Study for and Pass the CDL Knowledge Test

Once you enroll in CDL training, you’ll need to pass a written knowledge test at your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Here are some tips to prepare:

  • Study the CDL Handbook provided by your state.
  • Use online resources and practice tests to test your knowledge.
  • Take advantage of any study materials or classes offered by your training school.

Complete CDL Training and Pass the Skills Test

Your training program will cover both classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel driving practice. After completing your ELDT, you’ll be ready to schedule your skills test, which includes:

  • Vehicle Inspection: Demonstrating your ability to inspect the vehicle.
  • Basic Control Skills Test: Maneuvering the vehicle in different scenarios.
  • Road Test: Driving on public roads under the supervision of a CDL examiner.

Once you pass the skills test, you’ll officially receive your CDL!

Get Your Endorsements (Optional)

Depending on the type of commercial driving you want to pursue, you might need additional endorsements on your CDL, such as:

  • Hazmat Endorsement: If you plan to transport hazardous materials.
  • Tanker Endorsement: For vehicles that carry large liquid loads.
  • Passenger Endorsement: For driving vehicles with 16 or more passengers.

If you're interested in obtaining a Hazmat endorsement, you’ll also need to pass the TSA background check.
